Learning about magnets has been one of the coolest things we've done so far this year. We really loved learning about them but we especially loved experimenting with the magnets.
Firstly, we discussed where we have seen magnets before (a lot of us had them on our fridge doors at home). We discovered that they are used in anything that has a motor such as washing machines, microwaves and cars. We also learned that they are made from iron and the two ends are called north pole and south pole. If you try to stick two north poles together they 'repel' each other. This means that there's a pushing force between them stopping them from sticking together. Only the opposite poles will pull towards each other.
Our teacher then showed us a number of objects and we had to guess if we thought that the magnet would attract or stick to them. Some of these included rubbers, paper, spoons, paper clips, coins.
We then carried out our experiment and then we found lots of other things in our classroom that will attract magnets, such as the sides of our chairs and the blade in our sharpeners!
We love doing science experiments!
