Learning about magnets has been one of the coolest things we've done so far this year. We really loved learning about them but we especially loved experimenting with the magnets.
Firstly, we discussed where we have seen magnets before (a lot of us had them on our fridge doors at home). We discovered that they are used in anything that has a motor such as washing machines, microwaves and cars. We also learned that they are made from iron and the two ends are called north pole and south pole. If you try to stick two north poles together they 'repel' each other. This means that there's a pushing force between them stopping them from sticking together. Only the opposite poles will pull towards each other.
Our teacher then showed us a number of objects and we had to guess if we thought that the magnet would attract or stick to them. Some of these included rubbers, paper, spoons, paper clips, coins.
We then carried out our experiment and then we found lots of other things in our classroom that will attract magnets, such as the sides of our chairs and the blade in our sharpeners!
We love doing science experiments!

Fitness fun in Room 13
We've also been trying to improve our health and fitness in Room 13. We've been taking Bizzy Breaks during the day to help give our brains a break from all the hard work we are doing.
We also had fun doing some dancing with the Just Dance for Kids programme. Here we are busting a few of our moves!

Maths Fun - Shape Pictures
We've also been busy learning lots of different 2d and 3d shapes in Room 13. We got to practice some of the 2d shapes we learned, such as square, rectangle, triangle, circle and semi-circle using geoboards.
Geoboards are cool plastic boards with prongs sticking out of them. You can use elastic bands around the prongs to make shape pictures. See some of the cool shape pictures we made!

Handa's Surprise - Story telling, fruit tasting, music and drama fun
We loved reading the story 'Handa's Surprise' by Eileen Browne.
After we read the story we tried to remember all of the fruits that the animals had taken. We sequenced the story using human word sentencing.
After we finished retelling the story, we got to try some of the tasty fruits that are mentioned in the story. We ate some pineapple, mango and passionfruit. They were really yummy!
We also had lots of fun with the animal masks from the story. We got to pretend to be the different animals or characters in the story and acted out what happened.
Homes
We have been learning about different types of homes that people in Ireland can live in today. Some of these included; terraced, semi-detached, detached houses, bungalows, caravans, flats or apartments.
We all chose a different type of home and did a great job making them in art. We took inspiration from the Three Little Pigs and used sticks and straws! They turned out lovely and colourful.

Fashion Show Time!
We enjoyed making robot vests using lots of different recyclable materials. We used foil, old drinks lids, old earphones, egg cartons and straws. We showed them to the whole school during the fashion show.
